Ripple CTO Discusses XRPL vs. Bitcoin and Ethereum

Ripple CTO David Schwartz has shared insights on X regarding Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), and the XRP Ledger (XRPL), emphasizing XRPL’s transaction model advantages over Bitcoin.

Technical Perspectives

Responding to comparisons of transaction mechanisms, Schwartz stated:

>I think it’s pretty clear that the technical advantages of XRPL’s transaction model give it an advantage over Bitcoin. For Ethereum, given the mix of benefits and drawbacks, I think they each have applications they’re better for. When Bitcoin tends to win, it’s usually because it’s Bitcoin and not for any technical reasons.

This implies Bitcoin’s market dominance is primarily due to its first-mover advantage, rather than technical superiority.

Tech Comparisons

In a related discussion about technology superiority among Ethereum, Solana, and Bitcoin, Schwartz noted:

>ETH and SOL are better tech than BTC, which is natural—they came later. But BTC cannot and should not try to adapt at layer one because BTC’s value does not come from having superior tech to other cryptocurrencies at layer one, nor should it.

XRPL’s Unique Position

Schwartz described XRPL as an intermediary between Bitcoin and Ethereum, possessing some advantages of both:

>XRPL is at an intermediary place, with some of the advantages of Ethereum (more complex functionality than Bitcoin) and some of the advantages of Bitcoin (hardware wallets can know precisely what a transaction could do), but also some disadvantages of each of them, for example, less functionality than Ethereum and more complexity than Bitcoin.

Transaction Models

Schwartz also commented on the fundamental differences between Bitcoin and Ethereum’s transaction processes:
Bitcoin utilizes a UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) model, which distinctly authorizes fund transfers.
Ethereum uses an account-based model. This combines simple transfers with complex smart contracts, often leading to user errors, particularly with hardware wallets. Conversely, Bitcoin’s simplicity offers clear advantages for user experience with hardware wallets.
