The Evolving Crypto Ecosystem

The crypto ecosystem has made significant strides since the collapse of Sam Bankman Fried’s FTX, which wiped out billions in investor wealth in 2023. However, experts at the “Views From Wall Street to Crypto” event, held at Consensus Hong Kong, emphasized the industry’s need for further improvements to safeguard itself against future crises.

Insights from Industry Leaders

Gautam Sharma, CEO and CIO of Brevan Howard, noted that while technology has progressed in the last 18 months, there is still work needed to enhance risk management. He highlighted the importance of managing market, counterparty, and credit risks on a 24/7 basis.

The Challenge of Counterparty Risk

Counterparty risk, where one party in a transaction fails to fulfill their obligations, is greater in the crypto space compared to traditional finance. This is mainly due to the lack of intermediaries such as banks or clearing houses, which typically serve to ensure trust and facilitate settlements. Fabio Frontini, founder of Abraxas Capital Management, underscored that counterparty risk is crucial in arbitrage situations, and credit risk is equally important.

Stress Testing and Market Dynamics

Frontini advocated for the simulation of stress testing scenarios, especially in the perpetual futures market, ensuring that traders understand the risks of losing their margin. He explained, “Stress testing can be very rewarding when done properly.”

Mike Kuehnel, CEO of Flow Traders, pointed out the necessity of transparency in innovation to regain investor confidence, emphasizing the importance of data access and smooth liquidity movements without fragmentation.

The ability to transact effectively is vital for investor confidence, Kuehnel stated.

Concerns About Liquidity

Liquidity, or a market’s ability to handle large orders at consistent prices, has become a key focus following the FTX failure. Although there have been improvements in order book depth for major cryptocurrencies, concerns regarding the fragmentation of liquidity across various DeFi platforms and blockchains persist.
