Fortnite Introduces Fake Cryptocurrency in Chapter 6, Season 2

The popular battle royale game Fortnite recently added fake crypto in-game as a joke to poke fun at the cryptocurrency industry. However, crypto degens took it seriously and launched a meme coin named ‘$DB’, on Solana which soared to a market cap of $4.78 million before crashing to around $366k.

The In-Game Crypto

Fortnite added fake in-game crypto called Dill Bits in Chapter 6, Season 2, which is used to purchase high-tier loot at the game’s Black Market. Players can obtain Dill Bits by breaking into vaults spread across the map. The official description suggests it is a “confusing crypto coin you never knew you needed,” referencing dark web marketplaces associated with cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Along with Dillon Bits, Fortnite introduced guns named “Pump and Dump,” which is a nod to common market movements in scam crypto meme coins.

Creation of the Meme Coin

After seeing Fortnite’s comedic take on crypto, someone created a real DB token and launched it on Pump.fun. This platform allows anyone to create a meme coin easily. The viral nature of Fortnite meant the meme coin (DB) gained attention rapidly, reaching a market cap of $4.78 million within 24 hours.

Crypto traders promoted it on Twitter, with one declaring, “DillBits $DB is probably the best narrative the memecoin space has seen in the past few months.” The top three traders made significant profits from their investments in $DB.

The Ironic Collapse

Ironically, Fortnite’s “pump and dump” joke manifested as the $DB meme coin quickly plummeted after its initial spike. The market cap dropped to approximately $366k. This isn’t the first Fortnite-themed meme coin; other such coins, including $ChillGuy and $JONESY, have also seen rapid ups and downs.

The State of Solana

Additionally, Solana has faced a drop in price, falling to its lowest since October, down over 50% from its all-time high due to decreased trading activity. Currently, meme coin traders are cautious due to recent scandals affecting the cryptocurrency market.

Despite the market turmoil, analysts believe there is a 70% chance that spots crypto ETFs for Solana will receive SEC approval, potentially signaling a future uptick in investor confidence.
